Course Content
The MHFA training course is an internationally recognised course backed by the University of Melbourne. The course content is based on a systematic review of scientific evidence. All students receive a course manual and upon completion of the training will also receive a certificate formally recognising their skills.
There are four main subject areas covered on the course;
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Psychosis
- Substance use Disorders
For each subject area we discuss the symptoms, causes, treatments and resources for further information and support.
As with general first aid, there is an action plan to give confidence and direction in dealing with a mental health crises or an individual who you think may be developing a mental health problem. The course includes scenarios where the action plan can be put into practice. Emphasis is given to the early recognition of a developing problem and how to provide initial support.
Adult MHFA
This course teaches adults how to provide initial support to adults who are developing a mental problem, illness, or experiencing a mental health crises. Anyone can attend, however please note this is not a therapy or support group, it is intended to be an educational training.
Youth MHFA
Designed for parents, schools, organizations and individuals working with or caring for young persons. The four main areas (depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance abuse) are covered with a view to youth issues. Two additional topics are also included; deliberate self-harm and eating disorders. This course has a particular emphasis on identifying the early symptoms of psychosis in the young.
