Mental Health First Aid

Flannel FlowerWhat is Mental Health First Aid?

MHFA is “the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.” First aid is given until professional help is received or until the crisis resolves. Just like general first aid, MHFA is essential life-skills training for family, friends and workmates. Unique to MHFA training is its strong focus on prevention and early intervention through the recognition of symptoms.

The National Select Committee on Mental Health (April 2006) recommended that 6% of the population be trained and accredited in MHFA especially those with the “greatest probability of coming into contact with mental health issues, e.g. teachers, police, welfare workers and family carers”.
